Boys’ Shoes at Acorn & Pip
Do I need to get my child's feet measured before buying shoes?
Yes — and it makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Children's feet grow quickly, can differ in size between left and right, and vary significantly in width. A shoe that looks the right length might be too narrow, causing discomfort and long-term problems. Our trained fitters at The Shoe Shop, 5 Carr Lane, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AN measure both feet properly while your child is standing. It takes about 15 minutes and takes all the guesswork out of buying children's shoes.
Can I just walk in for a fitting at your Huddersfield shoe shop?
Yes — no appointment needed. The Shoe Shop is at 5 Carr Lane, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AN. We're open Monday to Wednesday 9am–4pm and Thursday to Saturday 9am–5pm. Our team is always happy to do a proper fitting — we never rush it. You can also call ahead on 01484 847 968 to check stock in your child's size.
How often should children's shoes be replaced?
Children's feet grow on average two sizes per year under the age of 3, and around one to one-and-a-half sizes per year from ages 3–6. As a guide, check growing room every 8–10 weeks for young children and every 3 months for older children. You should always have around 12–15mm (a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. If you're not sure, pop into our Huddersfield shoe shop and we'll check for free.
What should I look for in a well-made children's shoe?
A good children's shoe has a wide, rounded toe box that gives toes room to spread; a flexible sole that bends at the ball of the foot; a secure fastening (velcro or lace) that holds the heel in place; and breathable materials that keep feet comfortable all day. Every brand we stock at Acorn & Pip is chosen against these criteria — we don't carry shoes that compromise on foot health.
Why buy children's shoes from an independent shoe shop rather than online?
Buying online means guessing — guessing the size, the width, the fit for your child's specific foot shape. Getting it wrong means returns, delays, and a child wearing the wrong shoe in the meantime. At our Huddersfield shoe shop we measure properly, know each brand's sizing quirks, and won't let you leave with a pair that doesn't fit. The brands we stock — Froddo, Bobux, Ricosta, Geox, Start-Rite, Camper, and more — are all chosen because they support healthy foot development. That expertise is what you get when you come in.
