Start-Rite at Acorn & Pip

Why is Start-Rite trusted by parents and podiatrists?
Start-Rite has been making children's shoes in the UK for over 230 years — longer than any other brand we stock. That heritage matters because it reflects a genuine, deep expertise in children's foot development. Start-Rite shoes are designed with wide toe boxes, proper arch support, and structured heel cups to guide feet correctly through every stage of growth.

Do Start-Rite shoes need to be professionally fitted?
Yes — and this is especially true for Start-Rite, which is one of the few brands that still offers multiple width fittings (E, F, and G). A child with a wide foot who's been wearing a standard-width shoe may have been uncomfortable for months without anyone realising. Our fitters at The Shoe Shop, 5 Carr Lane, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AN use a proper foot gauge and measure both feet standing up. It takes around 15 minutes and makes an enormous difference.

Can I walk in for a Start-Rite fitting in Huddersfield?
Yes — no appointment needed. Just come into The Shoe Shop at 5 Carr Lane, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AN. We're open Monday to Wednesday 9am–4pm and Thursday to Saturday 9am–5pm. Our team always has time for a proper fitting — we never rush it.

What Start-Rite styles do you stock?
We stock Start-Rite school shoes, first shoes, trainers, sandals, and boots across the full width range. Stock changes seasonally, so we'd always recommend calling ahead (01484 847 968) or popping in to see what's currently available in your child's size.

How do I know when my child needs new shoes?
A good rule of thumb is to check growing room every 2–3 months — you should always have around 12–15mm (roughly a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. If you're not sure, bring your child into our Huddersfield shoe shop and we'll check for free. Growing feet can need new shoes more often than parents expect.
